M58 is one of ten Messier galaxies grouped within a five-degree area in downtown Virgo. It is located 52' south-southeast of M89 and 1 degree west-northwest of M59. Magnitude 2.9 Vindamiatrix, Epsilon Virginis, is 6.0 degrees to the east-southeast. My 10-inch Newtonian presents M58 as a 4'x3' oval with a bright, stellar nucleus. A 7th magnitude star stands sentry 8' to the west. There are no bright NGC/IC objects within a 15' radius.
